The sub fired a few torpedoes, the Greer responded with a few depth charges, and the chase came to an uneventful end. The British plane had attacked the U-boat with depth charges while the Greer continued in pursuit. The Greer had deliberately stalked the German sub, having been alerted to its presence by a British plane. Rather than being the victim of a surprise attack by the German sub: In retrospect, however, the attack on the Greer had not unfolded as FDR claimed. In April, FDR had dispatched American troops to Greenland (with the permission of the Danish government, which controlled the island) to keep it out of German hands and to provide protection for convoys ferrying materiel to Great Britain. With the passage of the Lend-Lease Act in March 1941, the United States had moved more aggressively to support London against Berlin. Roosevelt saw the clash in the North Atlantic as an opportunity to move American public opinion further against Germany under the guise of ensuring the freedom of the seas, a bedrock principle of American foreign policy. The Greer dropped depth charges that were equally ineffective, but the attack made it the first American ship to fire on a German vessel. As Roosevelt told the country, “ the German submarine fired first upon this American destroyer without warning, and with deliberate design to sink her.” The sub’s two torpedoes missed their mark. ![]() FDR’s speech was prompted by a clash a week earlier in the North Atlantic off the coast of Greenland when the USS Greer crossed paths with a German submarine.

The introduction to her "Russians in Alaska" includes this story: In what I can only hope is a coincidence, Lydia Black described a Black Legend about Russian Alaska, which was both started and countered in the United States. And there is no "Black Legend" about Russian expansion for the English-speaking world. For this reason the Russian point of view dominates. Much more is translated from the Russian. So they wrote most of the history that we read. In the case of British-Spanish competition the British were victors.
![]() The judge’s 49-page judgment also suggests that Absolute may need to rethink its laptop recovery business model. “A reasonable jury could also find that such conduct would cause a person of ordinary sensibilities to suffer shame and humiliation.” The case raises interesting questions about how intrusive a laptop tracking system should be and whether the software company had gone too far with its techniques.Īccording to the Federal judge hearing the case, “Although the Absolute defendants may have had a noble purpose, to assist the school district in recovering its stolen laptop, a reasonable jury could find that they crossed an impermissible boundary when they intercepted Plaintiffs’ instant messages and webcam communications,” wrote the judge. The charges against Clements-Jeffrey were eventually dropped, but she sued the police department and Absolute Software for invasion of privacy, constitutional violations (on the part of the police department) and violating computer crime laws. They also showed her the photos and “told her she should have known better than to do that kind of stuff on the webcam.” One of the detectives even told Clements-Jeffery the photos were “disgusting.” She was shocked and told the officers she did not was not aware that the laptop was stolen.Īccording to a judicial opinion in the case, the officers “told her that she was stupid and that she was under arrest” for receiving stolen property. Shortly after, the police arrived at Clements-Jeffrey’s house with a warrant to seize the laptop. The tracking system company, Absolute Software, then sent all of the data to local police including the teacher’s sexually explicit images and location data. Once the tracking system was activated, it reported the laptop’s IP address, and granted Absolute remote access over the computer – giving Absolute the ability to intercept emails, capture screenshots, and log key strokes.Ībsolute captured screenshots of the couple while exchanging naked photos and other sexually explicit behavior. The laptop tracking system was called “LoJack for Laptops” and was provided by Absolute Software.Īfter the school district realized the laptop had been stolen, they asked Absolute Software to retrieve information from the laptop in order to recover it. Clements-Jeffrey and her boyfriend, the laptop had a computer tracking system installed on it. Because of the time and distance between the couple, their correspondence was at times quite sexually explicit, including steamy emails, instant messages, and the exchange of naked photos. She got the laptop to work properly and then began using it to communicate with her long-distance boyfriend. Clements-Jeffrey did not realize the laptop was stolen. The laptop actually had been reported stolen by a student who had checked it out from another school district while using it at a public library. But she decided to proceed because the student told her that the laptop was not working properly and that his parents had given him a new one. The low price probably should have made her think twice about purchasing the computer. ![]() While working as a substitute teacher at an “alternative high school” in Ohio in 2008, a woman, Clements-Jeffrey, 52, bought a laptop from one of her students for $60. ![]() The covers for the surviving publications have been considerably toned down, while newer titles have avoided the staged shoots entirely in favour of news photos of actual killers, and have tried to take a more serious approach to the subject, not that they are fooling anyone, of course – this is still cashing in on a morbid fascination.īut the most outrageous era of true crime magazine covers is a somewhat forgotten one, not as fondly remembered as the classic art that preceded it and often seen now as the height of sexism, bad taste and political incorrectness. The true-crime magazine is no longer as popular as it was – in many ways, the new wave of women’s magazines like Take a Break offered the same sort of sensationalist stories (just look at the headlines splashed across the covers of most magazines in the women’s section of newsagents and supermarkets) in a more respectable – and more hypocritical – package. Presumably, these magazines spoke to the sort of fantasies and a desire to confront taboo ideas that went unspoken in polite society. The unspoken truth of the true detective magazine is that the main audience for these sensationalised tales of rape and torture, marketed with luridly sexually violent imagery, were – indeed, still are – women. By the 1970s and into the 1980s, the covers were often thinly disguised bondage shoots, yet these magazines remained a mid-shelf staple of drug stores and newsagents, while arguably more wholesome magazines like Playboy were either banished to the top shelf or banned entirely. But by the late 1960s, the style had changed to take advantage of loosening public morals, and increasingly featured photoshoots in which women in varying states of undress were terrorised by masked ruffians, while the headlines became ever more outrageous – the crimes in question were increasingly sexual, with rape and kidnapping competing with murder in the outrages stakes. The gameplay in SimCopter is absorbing and satisfying, but what makes the game a bit special is all the little extra touches Maxis has seen fit to include in the game. There are eight helicopters on offer in the hanger but find yourself a military base somewhere in your city and you may be able to lay your hands on something far more suitable for putting down riots. Soon though as the money comes rolling in, you will be able to trade it in for bigger and better things. Obviously special equipment will be needed for many of these tasks but luckily there is a shop in your home hanger which can provide you with all the necessities of life as a chopper pilot. There are nine types of mission in SimCopter ranging from the humdrum (clearing traffic jams) to the heroic (plucking sims from the top of speeding trains) and the fascist (putting down riots). ![]() There is no career to follow but a number of sliders allows you to choose what kinds of missions and their difficulty will be offered to you.
